Braille Complex
Ministry of Education has sponsored with the approval of DDWP/CDWP and ECNEC in its decision on 02-01-2006 for the construction of Braille complex at Karachi and this project will be executed by NBF.
The approved parameters includes construction of Library, Reading Room and Hall for multi purpose literary activities, beside programming, technical sections and room for installation of the press itself.
The objectives of Braille complex are as under:

To look after the welfare of visually handicapped persons.

To coordinate with Pakistan Blind association for the betterment and implementation of policies.

To identify titles for printing in Braille on the basis of priority.

To expand the production by extending it is printing of textbooks as well.

To introduce computerized printing in Braille.

To undertake multilingual printing.
Braille Press
There is an acute shortage of reading material in Braille. The establishment of the Braille Printing Press is the pre-requisite for making available both textbooks as well as supplementary reading in Braille to the Braille literate visually handicapped people. The main objective is to meet the requirement of visually handicapped literates which will ultimately contribute in the economic development of the country as an active citizens. NBF is already undertaking the activity with the production of Braille books and making these available to the visually handicapped almost free of cost.

The existing Braille Press at Karachi was established in 1976 and since its installation has so for produced 500 titles in Braille. Besides other publications of national importance & supplementary reading it has also published complete set of Holy Quran with its urdu translation in Braille. The Braille books so published are not only provided within Pakistan but the press also meet the request received from other countries.
The present set up comprises locally manufactured machinery comprising one Braille press with four stereo-type machines. The existing press being outdated with operational cost increasing day by day has become obsolete and requires up-gradation with the modern updated computerized mechanism. The induction of new computerized set up will not only upgrade the existing production capacity but would also help in improving the standard both in quality as well as quantity covering variety of disciplines
